Summary of Learning

Throughout the PR Publications curriculum we have had the opportunity to learn design techniques to complete projects that will couple with the overall Public Relations curriculum.

After learning the basics and completing novice activities to better understand design, we quickly jumped right in and began learning how to use Adobe Suite.

The format of the course at first seemed like high-paced low-stakes learning. However I soon realized that it was neither of those. By completing projects that I actually really enjoyed, I was able to find a desire to complete them in advanced of their due dates, plus I found value in each project regardless of the amount of points associated.

I enjoyed journaling/blogging each week because I was able to couple the design portion of the course with basic and oftentimes comical writing. It also kept me accountable for my own progress. Reflecting on each blog post last week offered me a lot of perspective as to how much I have developed since starting this course.

Although my blog posts weren’t viewed by large amounts of the “public” each week, it was really cool having my peers and classmates provide feedback to me throughout the course.

The final project – summary of learning, was definitely one of the ones that I felt most proud of. After re-watching my screen cast and understanding exactly how I created the direct mailer, I was able to realize just how much I had grown. Utilizing both InDesign and Illustrator was definitely a testament to that growth.

Overall, I am incredibly thankful for the knowledge and skill set I have gained throughout PR Publications and I would highly recommend students, even outside of PR and outside of Gaylord, try and gain the design practice with these programs.

Blog 4

Over the course of the last few weeks in PR Writing we put final touches on the semester’s work for our clients. For the Henderson Scholars Program this meant establishing business presence on multiple mediums of Google+. First I established business status for the organization on Google Maps, making it easier for audiences to navigate to the program’s contact information. In regards to contacting Henderson Scholars, I created both a Google Voice number as well as operating system for the program. This will allow for more efficient and effective communication for those interested in the program and the HSP staff.

Very recently we began work on our client’s launch. I have decided to utilize Facebook as the medium for the Henderson Scholars Program’s launch.   So far I have worked on generating effective content for the organization and tracking analytics in concerns to user data. It is my hope that the Facebook page will double as a means of communication for the scholars to receive updates and be recognized as well as an opportunity for the community and prospective students to learn more about the program.

I am excited to see the progress that other students have made with their clients throughout the semester as well as showcase my efforts.

What’s to Come?

To be completely honest I think I have 3-4 different websites with my name attached to them after various projects throughout college. In the past I have quickly worked to create them before a deadline then soon after forgotten about their existence. This blog, the same that I used to compile my study abroad experience, actually means something to me. Though I am still completely unsure as to how I will utilize its potential in gaining success down the road, that is a challenge I am looking forward to.

I very much so need to work on building the site more – I believe that I am still just as confused about pages and domains and sub outlets of a domain than I ever have been, but I am confident of my ability to fill all of those things with impressive work after completing this course. I foresee myself figuring out how to create the “About Me” “My Work,” and “Contact Me,” pages in order to fulfill my vision. I would like to use this page as a digital representation of who I am and what I would like to do, and hopefully, in the long run, this page will help me to bring those goals to fruition.

Summary of Learning

I’ve decided that for the last project, Summary of Learning, I will be convincing an audience to take PR Publications through the means of an InDesign Direct Mailer.

To tackle this assignment I will use my standard process of thought:

1.) Who is my audience?

2.) What action am I trying to get them to take?

3.) How does my client best benefit from this action?

4.) Can I utilize humor?

5.) Let’s Get to Work

InDesign is the tool in my design belt that I feel most comfortable utilizing after having completed this course. I believe that this final project will showcase well my process for completing design tasks as well as be a gauge of my ability to complete InDesign tasks.

I believe I am going to want to take on the extra challenge of convincing someone who is not a Gaylord major at all to take this course, I think that will give me more design experience. I will want to put myself in that niche’s shoes and think “what is PR Publications? How could it help me?” Once I have done that, I think that I will be able to hit the ground running on the design work.

From Hi There to Pepsi, What a Wild Ride

Since my time starting in PR Publications I can note a number of feats and losses. I am proud to say though, that I believe my feats far outweigh the losses. To recap, I began this course with an as novice as it comes understanding of Adobe Suite as well as design principles – I could tell you whether or not something was good, but there was no way I could explain to you how to make something good. Now, I can confidently say that I am more than just a novice.

Throughout this course I have been encouraged to try things that I hadn’t in the past. I am thankful for the opportunity to find theoretical work for clients that I am passionate about and for the work for clients I couldn’t possibly care less about. I am excited to showcase to you the projects that have meant the most to me and that I am most proud of, as well as the ones that looking back, were definitely completed at 11:52 pm the Thursday they were due at midnight. Client I Most Enjoyed Working For: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences

From business cards to fake memos, the Academy is where my true passion lied this semester.

Client I Least Enjoyed Working For: Pepsi

Perhaps it was because I chose them on a whim, or because it was towards the end of the semester, either way, Pepsi just didn’t resonate with me the way that I would have hoped.

Product I Am Most Proud Of: The Letterhead

Taking on the perspective of Dawn Hudson throughout this particular project was quite fun. I attempted to take a stab at something that I thought she maybe could have written or at least a topic she would have addressed, and kind of just went with it. This design was simple, clean and did the job it needed to for the client, though the content is my favorite aspect, it was the design that I believe defined the final product.

The Assignment That Could Use the Most Work: The Original Business Card

Trust me when I say this, that business card was trash. A photo of me on it? Absolutely not necessary. The color scheme? Possibly the worst thing I’ve turned in for a grade in quite some time. Looking back I believe I misunderstood the assignment and attempted to make a simple business card for myself for general purposes, but for anyone reading this, please refer to the updated version of the card located in the post titled “Gosh Bless the Academy.”

Blog Post I Am Most Proud Of: Research

From the Golden Globes to the Screen Actor’s Guild we are on the race to the Academy Awards, and hold onto your socks, we’re in for a wild ride.”

Not only was I able to combine my passion for film & television with an academic course, I was able to find ways to include my (not very effective) humor into a piece of work. I spoke trending topics in regards to Awards season, and it all played a role in my success in the assignments succeeding it.

Thank you, PR Publications, for changing my outlook on design as well as feeding a passion that I now have for creativity in the professional workplace. You will indeed be missed.

Reflection 5.1 – Pepsi Isn’t All That Bad

For this week’s assignments in PR Publications we were challenged to further develop our Fortune 500 Company’s newsletter and prepare it for publishing. Like I said last week, I chose Pepsi because at the time it had gained top-of-mind recognition for me.

When searching for news to include in the product I found that Pepsi, outside of the recent Jenner fiasco, is doing incredibly well with its community relations and internal development. They have a number of great projects in the works including a piece on current “Hidden Figures” that couples incredibly well with the recent feature film.

When it came to the design of the newsletter, I struggled most with spacing. I wanted to ensure that I had a sufficient balance between content and media and I am still unsure as to whether or not I adequately accomplished that. I saw other setbacks when it came to wanting to fit an appropriate amount of content onto the page but not overwhelm the reader. Color wise I stuck to Pepsi’s palette of blue, red and white and was sure to incorporate those in as many aspects as possible. Overall, I recognize that this newsletter may not be my greatest accomplishment as I am rather concerned with the spacing, however, I do believe that I was able to offset those issues with two interesting stories, photos and the overall final product.

In regards to InDesign I am becoming more confident in my ability to use the software and am looking forward to larger multi-page documents and products. Please see the final newsletter below.

 

Pepsi Newsletter

PR Writing Advocacy and Beyond

Throughout the last few weeks of PR Writing we have been offered assignments that have helped to further our chosen client’s goals. They have included things such as email and story pitches, logo creation, videography and most recently, speeches and slide presentations.

Within the last few weeks alone I have stopped to be thankful for the fact that I chose a client that I am passionate about because it makes dedicating time to these projects far easier than if I felt nothing towards the Henderson Scholars Program. When given these assignments I have begun to notice that with each one I follow a similar process. First I reflect on the work completed thus far in order to ensure that I remain consistent in the branding and wording of each project. Next I’ll assess my overall goals for HSP followed by specific goals for the task at hand.

My favorite project in the most recent sections would have to be the speech and slideshow presentation. The speech allowed for me to step into the shoes of the program’s director, Angie Wright, and develop a final product that I am actually rather proud of. I was able to think about all of the things that attracted me to the program and that have attracted donors in the past and highlight those things both in the speech and the presentation. Resources such as Canva and InDesign have all proven very helpful for these sorts of projects.

I am proud of the work that I have already done and the revisions yet to come, and I am very excited to continue work for the Henderson Scholars Program.
